Chapter History 1972 - 1973 School Year The chapter began this year determioned to find an identity of its own now that the founder's influence had faded. The first steps toward this new sense of pride was taken with the planting of ground cover in the soon-to-be completed formal garden. Rush parties added to the new spirit at the beginning of the year, and the traditional South Sea Island theme dominated the freshman get acquainted parties. Another rush function that came off well was the Road Rallye, with Greg Harbin clinching the effort award for last place. Many graduates returned home on October 20 for Homecoming, and they really had something to party about that night as Brother Steve Prezbindowski kicked the winning field goal as Rose won 12-9. Another source of joy for the brothers was the annual Fiji Olympics, this time held behind Speed Hall. The Alpha Phi sorority wlaked off with the trophy, expertly coached by Rodney Smith. To end the first quarter on a high note, Mike Hunke was pledged on November 13. A new twist was added to our rush effort this year as 25 frehmen coupled with 25 brothers attended an ABA game in Indianapolis the Wednesday before Bid Day. This night certainly aided in the catch of 13 new pledges. After Christmas, all the new pledges and brothers headed for McCormick's Creek State Park for the yearly Retreat. The men gained much insight into each other during the too short weekend. Social service projects occupied much of the Brothers, time during the winter quarter. On January 27, everyone traveled to Turkey Run for a work session at the Boy's Club called Camp Goulik. Cleaning and painting occupied a lot of time, as did the inevitable horsing around whenever a large group of Fijios gather. The boys club was also benefited from Fijs Dan Jackson and Grathe Nebbitt, who coached a biddy basketball team of 9 and 10 year olds to an impressive 13-6 record. Winter quarter also set the stage for the Purple Garter dance, as garters and expectations were raised. Only two days later, the new Cabinet was elected. It consisted of: Don Nolan - President The next two weekends saw the annual Installation Party and State Day, where the brothers listened to Bud Magles speak about the Ritual. As soon as the Brothers returned from Spring Break, it was time for Pig Dinner. It was held at the house, and featured Lawrence Lane (Purdue '50) as the main speaker. Spring quarter also saw the addition of seven new pledges including Dr. John Aho, a Civil Engineering Professor at Rose. Spring is always party time for Rho Phi, and this year was no different as consecutive weeknds in April were the scene for the Road Rallye and Fiji Island. Brothers Ken Rasner and Ed Doerflein were the Rallye winners, but everyone was a winner at the party held later on at Danny Kernz's farm. The Fiji Island party was held at Dr. Aho's house near Clinton. King and Queen Bohunkus were crowned Friday night, and Saturday a treasure hunt followed the usual lakings. Everyone had a good time, especially since the party hit a dry spot in Indiana's monsoon season. A one-on-one tournament was a weak disquise for a work session on April 20, as the Brothers engaged in mortal combat behind the house. Pledge Tom Frank came away with top honors. On May 4, somewhat less than mortal combat took place at Rose, in the annual Greek Weekend games as Rho Phi managed its traditional fourth place finish. However, a strong showing in the Songfest netted a second place. Brother Dave Steinbock was applauded for putting together a fine IFC dance prior to Greek weekend featuring Goliath. To put the finishing touches on the year, the Senior Recognition Service and dinner honored the thirteen departing seniors who had played such a large part in the advancement of Rho Phi. |
